Why Google is not indexing your pages
Indexing is a pipeline with four gates. Search Console tells you which gate you are stuck at, and the fix is completely different at each one — which is why generic advice fails so consistently.
Almost every "my pages aren't indexed" problem becomes tractable once you identify which gate is closed.
The four gates
- Discovery. Google learns the URL exists, via a link, a sitemap or a submission.
- Crawl. Googlebot fetches it. Subject to crawl capacity and priority.
- Render and evaluation. The page is processed and assessed.
- Index and serve. Google decides to store it and make it eligible to appear.
Mapping Search Console statuses to gates
| Status | Gate reached | Nature of the problem |
|---|---|---|
| URL is unknown to Google | Before 1 | Discovery: no links, no sitemap entry |
| Discovered – currently not indexed | 1 | Crawl priority and capacity |
| Crawled – currently not indexed | 3 | Evaluation: Google chose not to store it |
| Duplicate, Google chose different canonical | 3 | Consolidation, not exclusion |
| Excluded by noindex / robots.txt | 2 | Your own directives |
The two middle rows are where most of the confusion lives, and each has its own page: discovered and crawled.
What submission can and cannot do
Submitting a URL acts on gates one and two. It is a request to look. It has no influence on gate three — no amount of resubmission changes an evaluation decision, and repeatedly resubmitting a page Google has already declined is the single most common wasted effort in this field.

Questions
How long should indexing take?
Google does not commit to a timeline, and it varies enormously with domain history and page type. What is diagnostic is not the absolute delay but whether the Search Console status is changing over successive weeks.
Does requesting indexing in Search Console help?
It affects discovery and crawl scheduling for that URL. It does not affect the evaluation decision, so it will not help a page sitting in 'crawled – currently not indexed'.
Act on the gate you are actually stuck at
Submission moves discovery and crawl. For those two gates, SpeedyIndex runs the requests and charges only for URLs confirmed as indexed.
